This position provides technical support to scientists studying reproductive physiology and genetics of beef cattle. The position is located with the Reproductive Physiology Laboratory, USDA-ARS Fort Keogh Livestock and Range Research Laboratory in Miles City, MT. The mission of Fort Keogh is to research and develop ecologically and economically sustainable range animal management systems that ultimately meet consumer's needs.

Applying knowledge of germ cells, embryos, and/or supporting tissue during experimental techniques useful in manipulating these organs under research conditions.
Participating with staff scientists in all phases of research dealing with studies of beef cattle reproduction by performing a variety of specialized techniques in the field and laboratory.
Performing a wide variety of assay procedures including radioimmunoassays, enzyme assays, and colorimetric assays.
Developing, changing or modifying research or experimental methods and procedures according to the specialized needs of the moment.
Conducting a variety of biological sampling procedures from animals using surgery, venipuncture, cannulation, biopsies, and in-vitro fertilization (or other similar sampling methods).
Operating laboratory equipment such as liquid scintillation counters, gamma counters, spectrophotometers, and programmable freezing instruments.
Operating a personal computer for a wide variety of purposes from data recording to word processing and literature retrieval.
In order to qualify for this position, you must meet ONE of the requirements below for the respective grade level(s) in which you wish to be considered.
To qualify for this position at the GS-07 level:
Specialized Experience: you must have at least one full-time year (12-months) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service performing the following duties:
Assisting in utilizing sterile procedures for techniques such as tissue culture, radioimmunoassay, and preservation of samples;
Participating in planning research objectives by providing ideas and techniques to scientists;
Helping conduct a variety of biological sampling procedures from animals using methods such as surgery, venipuncture, cannulation, biopsies, and in-vitro fertilization;
Operating laboratory equipment such as liquid scintillation counters, gamma counters, spectrophotometers, optic microscopes, plate readers, and centrifuges; and
Storing research and experimental information in computer databases, written journals or other information tracking tools.
This experience MUST be demonstrated in your resume.
OR
Education: you must have successfully completed 1 year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education leading to a Master's degree in any of the following areas: biology, chemistry, animal science, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, or agriculture. (YOU MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS)
OR
Combination: you must have a combination of the specialized experience and education described above such that the percentage of required experience plus the percentage of required education equals 100%. To calculate, first determine your total number of graduate semester hours, and divide that number by 18. Next, divide the total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now add your percentages of education and experience. The two percentages must total at least 100% for you to qualify based on your combination of education and experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-09 level:
Specialized Experience: you must have at least one full-time year (12-months) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service performing the following duties:

Collecting and storing research and experimental information in computer databases, written journals or other information tracking tools.

Education : you must have successfully completed 2 full years of graduate level education (36 semester hours) or a Master's degree in any of the following areas: biology, chemistry, animal science, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, or agriculture. (YOU MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS)
OR
Combination : you must have a combination of the specialized experience and education described above such that the percentage of required experience plus the percentage of required education equals 100%. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
